Glancy Prongay Wolke & Rotter LLP (GPWR) is proud to announce that partners Rob Prongay, Kara Wolke, and Melissa Wright have been honored with the prestigious California Lawyer of the Year (CLAY) Award by the Daily Journal, California’s leading legal publication.
The award, presented on May 6, 2026, recognizes the team’s record-setting achievement in securing a $433.5 million recovery for investors in a securities fraud class action against Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. The case resolved investors’ claims that Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) misrepresented its regulatory compliance and monopolistic business practices between November 2019 and December 2020 in violation of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 — allegations GPWR pursued as sole lead counsel over more than four years of litigation. The recovery was the largest securities class action settlement of 2025 and ranks among the 50 largest U.S. securities class action settlements of all time, as tracked by Institutional Shareholder Services.
Statements from the Team
“In big securities cases, there is a lot of risk in going to trial. After all the litigation as we worked our way through their defenses, we were in position to promote a strong settlement,” said Kara M. Wolke, co-chair of GPWR’s securities litigation practice group and the firm’s general counsel. “We knew they had misrepresented their business practices and that the Chinese government had told them to stop. In the simplest terms, we alleged they said they would stop, but did not.”
