Case Summaries

In re Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. Securities Litigation

U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York (S.D.N.Y.) 1:20-cv-09568-GBD-JW Lead Counsel $433.5 million 2025

Glancy Prongay Wolke & Rotter LLP, led by partners Kara Wolke and Melissa Wright, served as Lead Counsel and secured a $433.5 million settlement in the S.D.N.Y. on behalf of Alibaba ADS investors. At the time, it was the largest securities class action settlement ever obtained against a Chinese issuer and ranked among the 50 largest U.S. securities class action settlements of all time, as tracked by ISS. The settlement resolved claims that Alibaba concealed its ongoing use of merchant exclusivity practices that violated Chinese antitrust laws, even after Chinese regulators had instructed the company to stop. It was reached after review of more than 1.07 million pages of produced documents, even though claims related to the Ant Group IPO and insider-trading claims against founder Jack Ma had been dismissed at the pleading stage.

The complaint was amended twice, with later allegations incorporating interviews with former Spirit employees and information arising from the Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 door plug blowout incident. Defendants moved to dismiss the operative complaint, and that motion remained pending when the parties reached a settlement following a full-day mediation session and subsequent negotiations.
